Why Are Horseshoes Lucky?
Hold your horses and read up on this St. Patrick's Day Trivia!
Buckle up lads and lassies, this might be a rough (horse) ride. Har dee har har!
So here’s the deal- horseshoes have been thought of as lucky for a long time. Like a long long time. So long that the horseshoe is thought to be lucky because they look like the present moon- which folks from way back in the day thought was lucky especially with regards to fertility.
Beyond that, they were made from iron, which was thought to be magic and provide protection from evil spirits. I bet this made riding on a trusty steed sporting four of them felt safe indeed! Especially since witches rode brooms because they were afraid of horses!
And then we have St. Dunstan who put horseshoes on the Devil himself (remember older depictions of Satan were half horse, half man-ish sort of being) but St. Dunstan recognized the Devil made shoeing him so painful that the Devil promised never to cross a threshold with a horseshoe on it if St. Dunstan would just let him go.
And they worked for Secretariat and Seattle Slew and the people who bet on them, right? Maybe a horseshoe will bring more luck into your life?
Make it a lucky day!
Felix
